THE latest large pub development in a thriving national chain is on cue to open in a former snooker hall in the North-East next week.
Wetherspoon's has made a name with its popular format of large open-plan pubs in town centres, serving food during the day, and adopting a policy of no background music or juke boxes.
Even the games machines are quiet so that they do not to upset the sensibilities of drinkers, who can choose from a range of up to ten real ales.
There are ten Wetherspoon's in the North-East and others in the pipeline in Consett and Sunderland, the second in the city.
The doors of the first outlet at Washington, Wearside, opens on Monday, in a 3,500 sq ft development in the Concord area.
The former snooker hall, in Victoria Road, opposite Concord bus station, has undergone a lengthy re-fit to create space for 650 customers.
It will provide work for 30 full and part-time bar and kitchen staff under the management of licensee David Routledge.
The former Royal Air Force military intelligence man has previously worked at the company's MetroCentre, South Shields, Sunderland and Newcastle Westgate Road pubs.
The Washington premises opens at 11am. It will serve food until 10pm daily, and 9.30pm on Sundays.
