RESIDENTS in a former pit village have been given permission to start improving their green.
New Herrington Square in New Herrington, near Sunderland, has been neglected for years and the Square Route Group has decided to do something about it.
They have now been successful in getting a grant of £3,500 from the Countryside Agency's Doorstep Green initiative, along with £2,000 from the community champions grant scheme.
These grants will fund a feasibility study and consultation to look at the square and see how it can be improved.
Square Route Group member Julie Coxon said: "This is the first stage of the Doorstep Green grant - the study will be used to apply for bigger pots of money to actually pay for improvements on the ground."
Groups which would like further information on this funding should contact the Doorstep Greens helpline on 0845 0000 121 or look at the web site www.nof.org.uk.
