A PLAN to site a giant ferris wheel at a coastal town's harbourside as part of the celebrations for the return of the Endeavour in June have angered town councillors.
Whitby councillors are protesting to Scarborough Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council about the plan put forward by an events company to erect the 150ft high wheel as an attraction for tourists visiting Whitby for the revisit of the replica of Captain James Cook's ship, which has just set off from its base in Australia.
Coun Dorothy Clegg, a leading conservationist and former town mayor, said residents believed the wheel would turn Whitby into 'a mini Blackpool'.
She added "It will dwarf the the Endeavour by comandeering a central space in the heart of the town. I hope this idea can be quashed".
