A GIANT cross erected outside Westminster Catholic Cathedral to mark the millennium could find a new home in North Yorkshire.

The 15m-high cross, inspired by Cardinal Basil Hume, the late Archbishop of Westminister and former Abbot of Ampleforth, may be moved to the grounds of Ampleforth Abbey.

It was erected in the piazza of the cathedral in the presence of The Duke of York.

Now, it is planned to transport the cross to the abbey to become a dual commemoration, both for Cardinal Hume and this year's bi-centenary of the abbey.

Under the scheme the cross would be positioned on a three-tier, 1.4m wooden plinth near St Thomas's House in the abbey and college grounds.

Val Dilcock, chief planning officer for the North York Moors National Park, is recommending that approval be granted for the cross to be erected.

She said that, although the site was prominent, the cross would not be unacceptably obtrusive in the landscape.

"This scheme relates to a very particular background set of circumstances which link the local area with this nationally significant cross," she said.
