SENIOR fire chiefs have hailed the success of a partnership scheme aiming to cut the number of chip pan blazes.
Since the start of a joint initiative with food company McCain, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has recorded a 21 per cent reduction in the number of chip pan fires and a 37 per cent fall in injuries resulting from such incidents.
The scheme began two years ago and will continue during National Chip Week. A community safety event will be held at Clifton Moor shopping centre, York, today, from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
Assistant divisional officer Graham Buckle said: "This partnership with McCain has certainly proved its worth. In anybody's book, a reduction in the number of chip pan fires from 174 to 138 is a significant impact on a very widespread problem."
