AN appeal to raise money for part of Darlington's Crown Street library has been set up in memory of a tireless volunteer worker who died last month.
Valerie Portass, 63, had been secretary of the Workers' Educational Association's (WEA) Darlington branch since 1975.
She had also been involved in the early years of the Darlington Women's refuge and the Darlington Re-Roof Housing Association, which is now known as the Darlington Housing Association.
During all of her efforts, few were aware Mrs Portass was suffering from systemic lupus erythematosis, a debilitating condition which eventually proved a contributory factor in her death.
Now, the WEA committee has decided to pay tribute to Mrs Portass, of Hogarth Court, Darlington, with the appeal for funds to buy equipment or study material for the library's local studies room, where she spent a lot of time.
Contributions can be made to The Honorary Treasurer, WEA Darlington Branch, c/o 32 Auckland Oval, Darlington, DL3 0LJ.
