POLICE have repeated calls for pensioners to check callers' identification after two women fell victim to bogus officials.

Since the start of the year there have been more than 24 distraction burglaries in County Durham, in which thieves have conned their way into homes. In more than half the cases the thieves said they were from the water board.

On Monday, two men used the ruse twice, the first time stealing a purse containing £200 and credit cards from an 80-year-old woman in Deneside, Lanchester.

They got into the house by telling the woman they were checking drains and put a blue dye down the toilet.

One man kept the woman talking while the other stole the purse.

They also went to a 74-year-old woman's house in North Holme, Leadgate, where they went through the same procedure and stole a large amount of cash from a bedroom.

Detective Sergeant Brian Anderson, of Consett CID, said there appeared to be clear links between the burglaries and police were looking to see if they were connected with others.

"In the meantime, we would again appeal to all pensioners to let no one into their homes unless they are absolutely sure that they are genuine.

"Anyone who has doubts should ring their local police station.

"Genuine callers would be happy to wait while their credentials were checked by the police, the water board or any official organisation.''

Both men are in their thirties. One is 5ft 8in, of medium build and is softly spoken. His accent is not local. The other is 5ft 1in, of medium build, and has a squeaky voice.

Anyone with information is asked to call Consett CID, on (01207) 504204, or Crimestoppers, on (0800) 555111.
