THE North-East is to host a major international heritage conference this summer.
The Investing in Heritage conference is being hailed as a highlight of 2002's programme of events for conservation and regeneration professionals across Europe.
Supported by English Heritage, Newcastle City Council, the regional development agency One NorthEast and the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, the conference is being held in Newcastle, from July 3 to July 5.
It will include speakers from landmark regeneration projects, as well as ministers from the UK and European Parliaments and the chairman of English Heritage.
Organisers hope to attract more than 250 delegates from across the UK and Europe.
The conference will address key regeneration themes common to projects throughout the world, such as achieving quality and sustainability and retaining local identity.
Delegates will have the chance to see award-winning regeneration work taking place in the Grainger Town area of Newcastle, which forms part of Newcastle/ Gateshead's bid to become European Capital of Culture.
