LIFEBOAT crews searched a stretch of North-East coast yesterday afternoon after a man thought he saw a ship disappear.
The Redcar lifeboat was launched at 12.51pm to search the area from Redcar to Skinningrove, in east Cleveland, after a local man rang Cleveland Police to say he had seen a vessel one minute which disappeared the next.
Coastguards scanned the area from the cliff while the lifeboat searched the sea.
Only one fishing vessel was found, which was not experiencing any problems. The search was called off after an hour.
Dave Cammish, of Redcar lifeboat station, said: "We are keeping an open mind on the report. We had no reason to doubt the report or the man making it. We don't leave things to chance and prefer to confirm all is well."
