VISITORS to a North-East Roman fort will discover Hadrian's Wall was not necessarily the first line of defence - it might have been barbed wire.

Following a find during excavations at Byker and Wallsend, Tyneside, last year, Segedunum Roman Fort, Wallsend, now boasts a reconstruction of an ancient form of barbed wire.

The display shows posts which would have had hawthorn bushes attached.

A painting of the wall puts the reconstruction into perspective, showing how the defensive system would have looked 1,800 years ago.

Bill Griffiths, curator, said: "Soldiers would have picked off the attackers, making the defensive system almost impregnable."

The fort is open daily, from 10am to 3pm.
