POLICE in Langbaurgh are tackling drugs with a two-pronged approach - targeting dealers and helping users conquer their habit.

Langbaurgh District Drugs Squad carried out an operation in Lanchester Road, Grangetown, on Tuesday night, which resulted in a 34-year-old and a 21-year-old being arrested.

A quantity of heroin together with suspected stolen jewellery and electrical equipment was recovered and the two women have been released on police bail pending further enquiries. This was followed up on Wednesday by a police caravan parked in Lanchester Road all day and most of last night.

Three police officers and a drugs counsellor from the Kings Road Drug Behaviour service were on hand to offer support and advice to members of the community, and to help drug users kick the habit.

Detective Constable Andy Parker, who led the raids, said: "We have identified there is a problem with drugs in the district and we are doing our level best to disrupt the dealers and stop the flow of drugs into the area.

"Last month, over 50 houses were raided and over 40 arrests made involving drug offences.

"We want to rid the community of many of the drug-related social problems they have to endure.

"This partnership with the Drug Behaviour Service is a new approach to tackling the problems two-fold, and if it proves a success, it will be repeated in other parts of the district in the future."
