Durham City Harriers - THE Harriers were very dominant in the North East Veterans open cross country championships at Blaydon, both Steve Everett and Caroline Ratcliffe finished second overall in their respective races.
The women's race over 5km also included the men's Over-70 category where super veteran Bill McNeil easily won his age group recording a time of 25.35.
Caroline was an isolated second for the rest of the race closing after Sheila Allen, the current British (Over-40) champion, who went on to win the race. Caroline secured second place in the end and won the Over-35 title in a time of 21.52. English international Val Hancock also had a very good race finishing fifth overall and clinching the 55 title recording 22.38.
Steve Everett had a superb run dominated most of the race until the closing stages of the 10km course when he was passed by veteran international Paul Morrison, but Steve hung on to second place in an excellent time of 36.58 and with Steve Marshall (Over-45) 19th in 40.00 and Ted Tait 13th in 40.36, the Over-40s team finished second.
Geoff Daniel finished 41st in 43.53 and Gary Coulter (45) finished 52nd in 48.25 and in the Over-50 category Alan Rowell had a good run and finished 36th in 43.14 and with Bryan Mackay Over-55 finished 58th in 49.08 and Brian Brown Over-55 64th in 50.36 scored third place in the Over-50 age group.
Mandale Harriers
Local youngsters were in fine form in the Tees Valley Sports Hall athletics championships at Thornaby Pavilion. In the Under-15 boys section Matthew Sutton and Steven Lince were in top form with three victories apiece. Sutton won the speed bounce and four-lap race with Lince winning over two laps. And they teamed up with Chris Waugh and Chris Eyeington to win the relay.
Hannah Cook and Debbie Forster won three gold medals in the girls event. Forster won the two-lap events as well as the high jump while Cook won the shot and standing long jump and ran in the winning relay squad. Chris Lince and Craig McBeth were the stars in the Under-13 age groups with Lince winning the vertical jump and four-lap race, while McBeth claimed the shot and standing long jump titles and was in the successful relay quartet.
Alisha Ellison and Kirstie McQuillen claimed two victories in the Under-13 girls competition. Ellison won the short putt and McQuillen the four-lap race and they teamed up to win the relay.

George Ehrhardt of Todmorden won the Danby Beacon fell race over nine miles finishing almost a minute clear of the Mandale due of Matthew Wynne and Joe Blackett, who led Mandale to the team title.
Paul Kelly (Darlington) was leading Over-40 veteran with Jeff Winder (Scarborough) the leading Over-50 and Ken Wilson (Mandale) Over-60 champion.
Helen Johnson (Bingley), a British international, was a runaway winner of the ladies race finishing well clear of North-East champion Alison Raw (Darlington Harr).
