A single, second-half goal from Lee Nogan brought Hartlepool United's third defeat in 15 outings.
York's former Darlington striker Lee Nogan netted the only goal, volleying in from eight yards on 67 minutes.
Pool , though, had their chances and Mark Tinkler went closest when his low volley crashed off the inside of the post and rolled across the line to safety.
But York were organised at the back and Pool, for all their possession, couldn't break the home side down.
