SCARBOROUGH and Whitby have each been nominated in the Safeway Excellence for England Awards run by the English Tourism Council.
Peter Dahl, director of tourism, said both towns had seen major investment in upgrading their holiday attractions and removing eyesores as part of regeneration and renaissance schemes.
"The investment, both public and private, is paying dividends. All the signs are that we are going to have a good season. Hotels are reporting excellent bookings and demand for the official holiday guide is well up," he said.
A short list is to be announced on March 5 and the winners will be named by tourism minister Dr Kim Howell at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on April 23 - St George's Day.
