A NEW partnership is leading to the creation of a public arts project in Middlesbrough.
Cleveland Arts is working with Marchday, which owns the Centre North-East block, in Albert Road, to commission an artist who is able to illuminate the 18-storey glass-faced building in a creative way. Most of the funding for the £50,000 project is coming from Marchday and from Arts and Business New Partners programme. Northern Arts has also contributed towards the scheme.
Following a presentation of work by 22 artists, Diana Thater, Peter Fink, Ron Haselden and Stephen Hurrel have been shortlisted for the project.
David Faulkner, from the Sponsers Club for Arts and Business, said: "The project will contribute hugely to the regeneration of Middlesbrough town centre and be a showcase of the part the arts can play in urban renewal as well as engaging with the tenants of the building."
John Orchard, director of Marchday, said: "We hope that Centre North-East will be a barometer of Middlesbrough's regeneration and this project will help to put both the building and the town on the map."
