PROPOSALS for a landfill site near a Ryedale village to be converted into a gas-powered electricity station have been unveiled.
Methane gas from the dump at Thornton-le-Dale, near Pickering, could potentially generate electricity for the next 25 years.
Salford power firm Natural Power has submitted plans to the North York Moors National Park Authority to build a station at Caulklands landfill site, on the edge of the village. National park planning officer, Mark Southerton, said the plan appeared to be environmentally friendly.
"The gas would simply escape into the atmosphere if it wasn't used," he said.
"We are currently consulting with the parish and interested groups for feedback on the proposal."
Mr Southerton said the former limestone quarry had slowly been filled with rubbish for more than 25 years.
"It won't be very long until its time as landfill comes to an end," he said.
"We are still looking into the implications, but it could potentially be a good plan. The proposal is for the generator to be located away from any local homes."
