A FORMER headteacher, who celebrates his 74th birthday today, is backing his old school's campaign to raise £25,000 in just over a week.
Austin Brooks was the first headteacher of Longfield Comprehensive School, in Darlington, and worked there for more than 20 years before he retired in 1990. He is now supporting the school's bid for special sports status, which would ensure pupils receive the best sporting facilities and coaching.
To make the bid, the school must raise £50,000 before March 1. If it is successful, it will receive more than £100,000 from the Government to develop its sporting facilities. Any new facilities built by the school would also be available for the community to use, and The Northern Echo is supporting the plans.
The school has already raised £25,000, but time is running out for it to raise as much again.
Mr Brooks is using the occasion of his birthday today to lend his support for the school's ambitious proposal.
He said: "We have always had a fine tradition of sport at the school, with good facilities and fine performances.
"Although I am no longer teaching at the school, I take a keen interest in what goes on there and would love to see this bid be successful."
If the school cannot raise the money by March 1, it will be unable to bid for special status until later this year, when the Government may not offer as many incentives to schools.
Any local business, organisation or individual who would like to pledge money to help the campaign is asked to call the school on (01325) 380815, or contact The Northern Echo on (01325) 505071.
