PLANS to create an airport car park for more than 500 vehicles have met opposition.

Cenargo, in Eaglescliffe, near Stockton, has applied to Stockton Borough Council for planning permission to create the secure car park for holidaymakers to use when flying from Teesside Airport.

The site is on the west side of Durham Lane, opposite the Kingsmead estate, and is part of the Cenargo warehouse and storage complex.

Teesside Airport and Railtrack have objected to the plans, along with Egglescliffe Parish Council and neighbouring residents.

A spokesperson for Teesside Airport said: "Passenger car parking at the airport offers 1,467 spaces. Current passenger demand is adequately catered for by the car parks, taxi and delivery services.

"The 500-space facility proposed would not appear to be based on market viability."

Railtrack has objected because it believes traffic volumes over the Allens West crossing, on the way to the airport, is already heavy, and the car park has the potential to further burden the crossing.
