North-East Counties
Durham City Harrier Rob Hand reached the veteran age of 40 in January and in his first race was chosen for the North East Counties cross country senior men's team in the UK Inter-Counties championships and World Trials. Rob was originally only a reserve, but was drafted into the team at a late stage and was delighted to be chosen. As it turned out, he had an exceptional run finishing 53rd out of over 300 competitors in a time of 39.57 for the 12km course helping the North East team to finishing third.
Rosie Smith on the other hand, one of the country's top junior athletes, had another fine run finishing a very creditable ninth out of 200 athletes in the U17 age group over 5km recording a good time of 19.30 and helped the North-East team to second for the silver medals. Jeni Page also had a good run but just missed out on the scoring team finishing 51st in 20.48 with Joanne Ritson carrying an injury finishing 130th in 22.29.
Aida Garagusian finished 65th in the Under-20 race in 28.07 over 6kb while Louise Trainor finished 150th in the women's 8km race in 33.26, both very good displays against top opposition.
Meanwhile, at the North East Counties Royal Signals road relays around the Team Valley Rob Hand continued his top form with a tremendous run on the sixth and last leg of the 6x2.2 miles recording 10.44 with the fastest veteran time of the day which in fact was a veteran course record, the enabled Harriers veterans A team to finish second in the Vets race and ninth overall.
