A SCHOOL is running holiday revision courses for A-level students in what is thought to be the first initiative of its kind in the region.
After research by Durham School identified a lack of revision courses in the area, it decided to organise its own for the Easter holidays.
It is inviting sixth-formers from schools throughout the North-East to take part in four- day courses in a range of subjects, covering all exam boards.
There will be a maximum of eight students per group, and teachers will give individual attention. The courses will be open to those studying for AS and A2-level exams, with those completing the second half of A-levels advised to concentrate on one subject.
Course administrator Nicola McCann said: "The course director tried to find out what else was going on in the region, but could not find anywhere that was offering the same type of tuition to small groups, giving concentrated attention."
She added: "We are aiming to give that extra bit of help that some students would find invaluable."
Ms McCann said most A-level students' minds would be focused on revision during the Easter break.
"They really need to knuckle down in the Easter holidays," she said.
"The courses' timing is quite crucial, and they will be very concentrated over four days."
Each course will comprise eight sessions, spanning roughly the same hours as the normal school day.
Courses will run from Sunday, March 24, to Wednesday, March 27, and students will have the option of staying at the school, in Quarry Heads Lane.
Non-residential places cost £250 plus tax, including lunches and refreshments, and three-night residential places cost £300 plus tax, including half-board accommodation and access to the school's swimming pool and sports facilities.
Ms McCann said: "We have sent out information to a huge number of schools and so far, we have had quite a number of inquiries."
If the scheme proves successful, Durham School plans to repeat it in other holidays.
