MUSEUMS in Stockton are among the top 25 per cent in Britain, according to national figures just published.
Stockton Borough Council's museums service was placed among the top local authorities in England for the number of visitors to its facilities in 2000/2001.
The library service is in the top ten per cent of all unitary authorities for the number of users who reserved a book and were satisfied with the outcome, and the top 25 per cent for the number of books and other items issued.
Stockton's library service is also in the top ten per cent of all authorities in England for the number of users who found the book they wanted. It also keeps customers happy by being among the top 25 per cent for the number of users satisfied with the service.
The report comes just after news that the service has been shortlisted for Beacon Council status, as well as being awarded the highest rating for the third consecutive year for its library plan.
Andrea Barker, assistant director for education, leisure and cultural services, said: "Much of what has been achieved has been through strong partnerships with other departments in the council, as well as working with external organisations.
"I am confident that the services will go from strength to strength."
Alex Cunningham, cabinet member for education, leisure and cultural services, said: "I am very proud of the staff who put the people of the borough first to ensure they get the support and services they need."
