A FORMER mining village is set for a blossoming new future thanks to a pilot scheme.
Murton Parish Council has pooled its resources with the District of Easington to help create a more attractive environment in the village.
The partnership will ensure the creation of more flower beds and planted areas, and meticulous maintenance.
Particular attention has been promised for the Woods Terrace area and the two main entrances into the village.
The pilot scheme will also see the removal of litter, rubbish and weeds, better trimming of overgrown edges and pruning of untidy plants.
At the launch of the venture yesterday, it was promised that by teaming the district's machinery and skilled operators with the parish workforce's horticult-ural expertise, Murton would soon be transformed into a much prettier place to live.
The parish council has also accepted responsibility for the maintenance of a new roundabout on the A19 flyover.
Chairman of the parish authority, Councillor Ernie Robinson, said: "Murton Parish Council is committed to working in partnership with the District of Easington on this pilot scheme, which will provide a more pleasing environment for all residents.''
Councillor Arthur Nevens, who holds the public services portfolio at Easington District said: "Such working partnerships are being actively pursued at the request of the Government. This pilot scheme is welcomed by all councillors and employees at both local authority oranisations."
As the scheme got under way, Coun Robinson said: "We will shortly be applying for the Government's newly created Quality Parish Status, which will bring more funding."
