PEOPLE living in an east Cleveland village are objecting to proposals for the demolition of outbuildings to make way for a bungalow.
Wilton Village, near Redcar, is off limits to development because it lies in a conservation area.
However, a suggestion has been submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's planning committee to consider demolishing stone outbuildings, which are in a poor condition, at the edge of the village and replace it with a house and detached garage.
The proposal would also involve the removal of trees that characterise the village.
People are concerned about the proposal and 47 villagers and residents of the Castle Dene Care Home have signed a petition against the proposal because they are concerned about the removal of the trees and because the outbuildings are very close to other homes. The owner of the care homes also says the trees act as a screen for residents from the view out to the Wilton industrial site.
However, because the applicants have said they are prepared to re-use the existing stones on the new building, officers from the council are recommending that the committee gives the scheme the go-ahead. And because the woodland has been badly maintained over the years, the authority's arborist believes a number of trees should be removed.
The committee is due to discuss the matter on Monday
