THE partnership which pioneered the rapid repair of Richmond's Mercury Bridge has won its second award.
The River Swale washed away the central pier of the historic crossing in June, 2000, leading to fears that it could be some time before the road to Catterick Garrison in the south was reopened.
However, a temporary structure which allowed cars across was open within three months, while the bridge was restored to such an extent that it was able to carry all traffic by Christmas the same year.
The Mercury Bridge Partnership - comprising North Yorkshire County Council, and construction firms Mouchell and Morrison - was awarded the Historic Bridge Award in November last year.
Now, the Yorkshire Association of the Institute of Civil Engineers has recognised the speed and quality of the project with a Special Commendation
