ANOTHER North-East city is getting a Millennium Bridge this weekend.
Durham city's footbridge, the first in the city for decades, will be lowered over the River Wear by a 500-ton crane this morning.
The bridge, which will link Framwellgate Waterside and The Sands car park at Freeman Place, is costing £460,000 and is funded by the Millennium Commission and the city and county councils.
The bridge is due to be completed next month, and is part of the city's Millennium City project.
It will be near a £30m four-star hotel to be built by Closegate Hotel Developments, of Newcastle, and run by SAS Radisson.
County council deputy leader Don Ross said: "The last new footbridge across the river in the city was about 40 years ago, with the university's Kingsgate Bridge."
A city council spokeswoman said: "A new Millennium bridge is a really exciting event for Durham. It will provide a useful link."
Framwellgate Waterside will be closed during the operation. Essential access will be from Sidegate
