Police appeal for witnesses
POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was killed while crossing a road in Newcastle.
A man and a woman were using a pedestrian crossing on Jesmond Road, in Jesmond, when they were hit by a red Peugeot 206 travelling west. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to Newcastle's Freeman Hospital with serious injuries.
Anyone with information on the incident, which happened at 11.15pm on Saturday, is asked to contact police on 0191 454 7555.
APPEAL LODGED: An appeal has been lodged against Durham City Council's refusal to grant outline planning permission for a detached bungalow to be built on land at the rear of Longarth and Western Cottage, Whitesmocks, Durham.
CHANGING ROOMS: Durham City Council has granted Kerry Foods planning permission to build a single-storey extension that will provide staff changing rooms at the firm's plant in Dragon Lane, Durham.
COACHING SESSIONS: Chester-le-Street District Council is holding netball coaching sessions at Roseberry Comprehensive School, Pelton, on Monday evenings between 7pm and 8pm. Admission is free. For details call the leisure services department on 0191-387 2124.
TABLE THANKS: Durham Dunelm Round Table thanks everyone who supported its street collections at the Arnison Centre, Pity Me, and at Langley Moor, in December, which raised £282.62 for a pensioners' Christmas concert at Durham Johnston School.
CHURCH ROOM: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a single- storey extension, which will provide an additional meeting room, to be built at the Presbytery of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Mill Lane, Gilesgate. The church is also asking to extend its car park.
ART DISPLAY: An exhibition of paintings by mature students from an art class run at the City of Sunderland College's centre in Shiney Row are on display to the public at the centre until Thursday, March 7. For details about the exhibition and the class, call tutor Neil Molloy on 0191-511 6192.
Residents' surgeries: Belmont county councillor Barbara Howarth will hold residents' surgeries at Carrville Methodist Church, next Monday, between 6pm and 6.45pm, at Belmont Library on the same day, from 7pm to 7.45pm, and at Belmont Community Centre on Wednesday, March 6 from 6pm to 7pm. Because of the Easter holidays, Coun Howarth's April surgeries will be held in the second week of the month.
