STAFF at Tesco in Scarborough town centre are mounting a campaign to keep it open after being told the supermarket giant is planning to sell it to a hardware chain.
The store has been in the Balmoral Centre since it was built 26 years ago and employs 60 full and part time staff.
The company also has a superstore at westwood on the fringe of the town centre.
A spokesman for Tesco confirmed that it was in talks with Wilkinson's the hardware chainstore concern.
Sue Hutchinson, who supervises the checkouts, said "We are not giving up without a fight. Customers have been coming in for some time telling us about rumours. Staff are gutted."
There have also been reports in the town that Tesco is looking for a site to build a large store to replace its two existing ones.
