SUNDERLAND midfielder Jason McAteer last night paid tribute to his Republic of Ireland team-mate Shay Given for his match-winning derby performance - then said he didn't think Newcastle would beat Manchester United for the Championship.
McAteer said: "Shay Given is a world-class keeper. I have seen his quality in the Republic of Ireland team and especially when we played Iran away in the World Cup qualifier.
"He is probably one of the best shot stoppers in the world. And I think he has won the game for Newcastle.
"I knew the shot from Kevin Phillips was on target and he made a world-class save to keep it out."
But McAteer does not think Newcastle have what it takes to win the Premiership.
He said: "Newcastle are good, but I don't think they are that good. I don't think they are title material.
"I can see Manchester United winning the title, but the way Newcastle play they do it well.
"They have a solid back four and players who are confident and who can win matches for them.
"If they continue to play well I am sure Europe is within their grasp and they might finish second or third, but I don't think they are as good as Manchester United."
McAteer thought Sunder-land had done enough to draw a helter-skelter derby.
He said: "I thought the way the game went a draw would have been a fair result. On the day I don't think either team deserved to lose.
"Certainly with all the effort we put in we are disappointed to have lost."
