A MAN appeared in court yesterday accused of the murder of a mother-of-five in a late- night incident outside a pub.
Colin Andrew Mattinson, 21, is alleged to have killed 59-year-old Teresa Mennell near the Metropole, in Gateshead, Tyneside, shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Mrs Mennell, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, collapsed during the incident and, despite efforts of passers-by to resuscitate her, was certified dead on arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
A subsequent post-mortem examination established she died from a brain haemorrhage as a result of a blow to the head.
It is understood she went to the pub with her husband while visiting a son who lives in the Gateshead area.
Mr Mattinson, of Prince Consort Road, Gateshead, appeared before the town's magistrates yesterday. The case was adjourned and he was remanded in custody, to appear at Newcastle Crown Court, on March 4.
Witnesses to the incident are asked to call 0191-221 9087
