A TASTE of African culture is coming to Durham schools in a project to promote the arts.
South African Raymond Takalani Otto began a 14-day tour of County Durham at Trimdon Village Community Infant and Nursery School yesterday.
Mr Otto worked with children aged three to seven years old and talked about life in South Africa.
He taught African drumming rhythms - copied by the children on plastic buckets - music and dance, and the day ended with a performance involving children from all the age groups.
Headteacher Alison Ashton said: "He's a very lovely person who's really lifted the children's understanding of African rhythms, dance and life."
The visit is part of an arts education project organised by Sedgefield Borough Council.
Mr Otto will visit 11 schools throughout the borough and will work with 800 children.
The council tries to promote two tours each year, and is open to suggestions.
The arts development officer, Stephen Wiper can be contacted on (01388) 816166, ext 4434.
Mr Otto has a website - www.takalani.co.uk - which details the workshops he offers.
