PEOPLE have stepped up their campaign against a £50m housing development by drawing up a petition.
The plans to build 800 houses on land next to Whitworth Hall, the ancestral home of folk hero Bobby Shafto, in Spennymoor, has angered people living on a nearby housing estate.
A petition against the development, signed by 132 people living around Carr Lane, Kirkdale and Kildmere, has been presented to Sedgefield Borough Council.
Local councillor Ben Ord confirmed that the residents had given him the petition and said he had passed it on to the council's planning department.
The petition argues that the proposed development would ruin a beautiful walkway and create road safety problems.
Coun Ord said: "I do encourage anyone who has any views or objections to write to the planning department at Sedgefield Borough Council.
