A GROUP of soldiers are to attempt to run the equivalent of four marathons to help save endangered wildlife.
Members of the 101 Regiment Royal Artillery, known as the Geordie Gunners, are undertaking the challenge in aid of animals in Zambia, central Africa, which they will visit in July.
During their time there, the soldiers, based at the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer workshops at Kingston Park, Newcastle, will repair vehicles and communication equipment used by anti-poaching patrols.
At 10am today, they will take to the treadmills at Springs Gym, Kingston Park, to raise money for the trip.
Captain Stuart Olden, who will lead the team, said: "The wildlife authorities' work ensures that the elephant and black rhino populations survive the threat of extinction.
"The elephant has been continually hunted for its ivory and its numbers have been reduced by 90 per cent over the past 40 years.
"We hope people will show their support for this project and turn up at the gym to cheer us on."
Anyone who can help with sponsorship for other planned events should contact Captain Olden on (07812) 361624.
