TWO young Cleveland riders are off to South Africa later this month to represent Great Britain in an international tournament for under 14s.
David Harland from Newton Mulgrave, near Saltburn and James Reveley from Lingdale will join forces with Jodie Ward from Pocklington and Katie Haines from Wales after being selected by the British Show Jumping Association.
They have been invited by the South African National Equestrian Federation to compete in the International Children's Classique being held near Johannesburg over the Easter period.
They will ride borrowed ponies, competing against teams from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Botswana.
David began his affiliated show jumping career aged seven and he formed a winning combination with his newly-acquired novice 128cm pony Ultimate Challenge.
They won the Scottish Junior Masters at Gleneagles in 1998 and were in the top five BSJA rankings every year, winning prize money of more than £8,000. Their final competition was at Hickstead RIHS in 2000 when they were second.
His 148cm ride is Colourwood Colando and that partnership has made David the Area 12 leading rider.
James, the grandson of racehorse trainer Mary Reveley, has continued his good run by qualifying her Spirit of Bodecia and Lynn Barker's Double Dominic for the Royal International at Hickstead.
He finished first and second in a class of 40 for the winter 138cm second round held at Arena UK.
This is the third year running he has qualified two ponies for the Hickstead showpiece, which takes place in July
