NORTH-EAST vets are offering free dental checks for cats and dogs.
More than 1,000 surgeries across the country are taking part in Pet Smile Month, which runs throughout March. The Abbey Veterinary Practice, in Dunleigh House, Newcastle Road, Crossgate Moor, Durham City, is taking part. Vet Christopher Whalley said: "It's not just a matter of smelly breath. Dental disease is a serious animal health and welfare issue.
"Dental disease can affect the whole body. The build-up of plaque could mean the development of an infection and spread of bacteria through the bloodstream to damage the kidneys and heart valves, as well as creating abscesses elsewhere in the body.''
Anyone wanting a free check-up for their dog or cat is asked to call 0191-384 5115.
An art competition for youngsters aged four to 17 is being run as part of the event. Details are available from the surgery, which is open from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
