AN historic site, renowned for its Roman remains, is to become a public park.
The Castle Garden Project is being developed behind the Old Lodge Hotel at Malton, a site designated as an ancient monument because of its Roman fort, the remains of Malton castle, and a Jabo bean mansion.
Di Keal, a leader of the Derwent Riverside Project which is masterminding the scheme said: "This is an exciting venture which will benefit the communities of both Malton and Norton."
She said English Heritage had authorised initial clearance of the site and a partnership group had been set up, including Ryedale District Council, Fitzwilliam Estate, English heritage, and the local archaeological and historical society.
Grant aid is being sought from the Heritage Lottery, Awards for All, the Community Fund, Market Towns Initiative and English Heritage.
"Our aim is to use the existing features of the land to develop a natural parkland area," said Mrs Keal.
