VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help stage an agricultural show at a newly redeveloped site.

The multi-million pound Herrington Country Park, in Sunderland, will mark its opening on the weekend of July 13 and 14, by hosting the Durham County Show.

Organised by the Durham County Agricultural Society, the show, one of Britain's largest, will be held on the site every summer afterwards.

Since it was established in 1841, it has featured such attractions as horse and dog shows, fur and feather competitions, trade stands, a farmers' market and live entertainment.

Organising secretary Christine Duke said: "We hold these events to showcase the agricultural expertise of the region and the high quality of produce it manages to provide.

"There is something for everybody, from the trade stands to the shows.

"We are self-funding, and are asking for the help of anyone who is interested to get involved as a volunteer.

"It could be helping to set up the show ground or directing the traffic around the car park, but there is plenty to do to help us put on a great show for Sunderland."

Keith Hamilton, Sunderland City Council's landscape and reclamation manager, said: "Hosting the Durham County Show is the perfect way to introduce people to Herrington Country Park, a site which will be enjoyed by families in Sunderland for generations to come.
