Dutch master Dennis Bergkamp conjured up another magical goal as Arsenal moved level on points with leaders Manchester United in the Premiership title race at the expense of Newcastle's own championship push.
Bergkamp, who scored a sublime goal in the Gunners' Champions League hammering of Bayer Leverkusen in midweek, struck in the 11th minute at St James' Park with a stunning effort.
Robert Pires slid the ball into Bergkamp who spun Nikos Dabizas in amazing fashion before slotting past Shay Given.
It was Bergkamp's 11th strike this season and he was also the creator of the Gunners' second four minutes before half-time when he curled in a free-kick for Sol Campbell to beat the sorry Dabizas and head a rare goal.
This victory extended Arsenal's uneaten run to 16 games as they avenged the 3-1 home defeat by the last side to beat them, and ended Newcastle's six-match winning sequence.
