MORE help is on the way for owners of old cars being targeted by thieves on Teesside.

Crimebusters were "overwhelmed" by a response from motorists to a recent offer of heavily-discounted steering wheel braces.

Cleveland Police had negotiated discounts with the manufacturers of Diskloks on behalf of owners of older Vauxhall Novas, Astras and Cavaliers, which are among the easiest and most popular cars to steal, according to Home Office figures.

Now crime prevention officer Gerry McBride and his colleagues are promising to help motorists of other potentially vulnerable cars, such as Ford Sierras, Fiestas and Escorts registered between 1986 and 1993.

On average, a total of 12 cars a day are stolen across the force area.

"The response was absolutely amazing," said Mr McBride.

"Our greatest difficulty was getting back to everyone who called, but we have now employed an extra member of staff to help us with the second phase of the initiative.

"We are committed to preventing auto crime from happening in the first place, but we realise security measures can be expensive for some people.

"This scheme means more people have the chance to buy a very effective and highly visible deterrent."
