A HOUSING company is backing a former pit village's bid for green success.
The Sunderland Housing Group, which runs the city's council house stock, has sponsored Ryhope Community Association's plans for this year's Northumbria in Bloom competition.
The two organisations, with Sunderland City Council and the Ryhope Development Trust, are planting bulbs, shrubs and trees. Planters and baskets will also be installed before judging in the summer.
Councillor Ross Wares, chairman of Ryhope Community Association, said: "I am delighted to welcome Sunderland Housing Group as a new partner.
"Along with Ryhope Development Trust, it will help build on last year's success when Ryhope gained a merit award in the competition.
"It will make our entry into this year's competition that much stronger. Also, it will make Ryhope a more pleasant place.''
Sunderland Housing Group local director David Dixon said: "Following on from last year's success for Ryhope in the Northumbria in Bloom competition, Sunderland Housing Group are proud to build on the community partnership to improve the environment for local residents and visitors alike and we hope our partnership is as successful this year.''
