A spin-off series from popular ITV drama Heartbeat is undergoing a name change.

The six-part hospital series set in the 1960s has the provisional title of Whitby Royal and is expected to be shown next year.

But makers Yorkshire Television say the name is likely to change. The stories are set in a fictional town and it is felt having the name Whitby in the title would give viewers a misleading impression.

Filming has begun on locations in the Yorkshire area with former Heartbeat star Bill Maynard recreating his role of loveable rogue Claude Greengrass.

The latest signing for the new series is Nanny and Not In Front Of The Children star Wendy Craig, who will be returning to her native North-East for filming.

The actress, who lived on a farm near Yarm and went to school in Darlington, will play a hospital matron in the new series. The cast also includes Michael Stark, best known as window cleaner Sinbad in TV soap Brookside.
