ANGEL of the North creator Antony Gormley is urging local artists to join a schools campaign.

The sculptor is helping to promote The Big Arts Week, a national campaign aimed at getting artists into schools, taking place in June.

Newcastle Theatre Royal has already signed up, along with opera singer Lesley Garrett, actress Helena Bonham Carter, interior designer Linda Barker and Blackadder and Four Weddings and a Funeral director Richard Curtis.

Mr Gormley said: "Artists of every kind are being asked to spend just an hour or more working with children and young people in our local schools during The Big Arts Week, from June 15 to 22.

"In the North-East, we've already got 145 schools wanting to take part, but we still need a lot more artists to sign up.

"By the end of March, we're looking for another 130 artists, one for each school.

"Anyone can volunteer - singers, painters, musicians, illustrators, poets, architects, actors, dancers, designers, stage managers, writers, producers and directors."
