Celebration of racial diversity

An annual event to celebrate racial diversity is being held in Darlington on Saturday.

The Darlington and Durham County Racial Equality Council is staging its third diversity day at the town's Dolphin Centre from noon to 6pm.

The theme for the event is "edutainment", aimed at educating and entertaining visitors with musicians, dancers, food, visual arts, activities and workshops representing the diverse cultural population of the community. Entry to the event is free.

BLOOD DONORS: Blood donor sessions are being held at the Parish Hall, Newgate, Barnard Castle, today, from 3pm to 7pm, and at King James I Community College, Bishop Auckland, on Thursday, from 3pm to 7pm.

HARRIERS' MEET: The Darlington Harriers and Athletic Club is inviting past and present members to its annual presentation evening on Saturday, April 20. Guest of honour will be Olympic medallist Mike McLeod. For details contact club secretary John Brant on (01325) 257672.

PIE AND PEAS: A "pie, pea and pud" evening is being held at Redworth Village Hall on Friday night.

HOME CONVERSION: A planning application to convert a house at Burdon Hall, Bishopton Lane, Great Burdon, Darlington, into two homes has been submitted to Darlington Borough Council.

STONES TRIBUTE: Rolling Stones tribute band, The Counterfeit Stones, will perform at Darlington Civic Theatre on April 4.

RAMBLE DATE: The Darlington Coronary Support Group will hold a four-mile starter ramble around Barmpton and the Skerne Valley on Thursday, meeting at Glebe Road at 2pm. The walk will be led by Gordon and Olwen Wilcock.

CELEBRATION SERVICE: There will be a locality celebration service at St Herbert's Church, Yarm Road, Darlington, on Sunday, March 17, at 3pm.

PIANO CONCERT: The next concert in Darlington Piano Society's international series will be held at Darlington Arts Centre, Vane Terrace, Darlington, on April 20, at 7.30pm, featuring Turkish pianist Gulsin Onay.

CHARITY WALK: The Darlington Lions Club is holding its annual charity walk in the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday, May 5, when walkers are invited to raise cash for a charity of their choice. The cost is £3 per person, or £1.50 for people aged 14 and under, who must be accompanied by an adult.
