Missing man is safe and well

AN 82-year-old dementia sufferer who wandered off from his wife's parked car as she went into a shop, turned up safe and at the weekend. Concern grew after Charles Plunkett went missing from Safeway car park in Fulwell, Sunderland, on Friday afternoon. Police said last night that Mr Plunkett had been found several miles away, at the National Glass Centre, in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. He was said to be safe and well and was taken home to the Seaburn area.

HOMES PLAN: Brancepeth Leasehold Syndicate is seeking outline planning permission from Durham City Council to build two detached homes south of Goatbeck Terrace, at Langley Moor. It is a resubmission of a previous application.

CLUB EXTENSION: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a single-storey pitched roof extension to provide extra toilets, at the side of St Joseph's Catholic Club, Durham Road, Ushaw Moor. There are also plans to provide disabled access.

BOOK SALE: Hundreds of books will be on sale for 50p each when Oxfam holds a clearance sale on Saturday, March 16, at St Nicholas Church's lower hall, in Durham's Market Place between 10am and 4.30pm.

COFFEE MORNING: A coffee morning will be held on Tuesday, March 12, from 10.30am to noon in The Institute, Church Street, Durham, when there will be a raffle, tombola, bric-a-brac and books on sale. Entry is free and proceeds will go to North-East Cancer Research and St Oswald's Guide Company.

TALENT FINAL: Seven students will give their best shot as a Pop Idol-style talent contest reaches a climax at DH-1 nightclub in North Road, Durham, tonight. Pedro, Phillipa, Lizzy, Sarah, Ricki, Nathan and David, from either Durham University or New College, Durham, will perform from 11.30pm, with the result expected to be announced about an hour later.

ART SHOW: A collection of recent paintings, including oils of country scenes, by Barrie Rawcliffe have gone on show at Grey College, in South Road, Durham. They can be viewed during the next two weekends, between 10am and 6pm, or daily by appointment through the college, on 0191-374 2900.

ALADDIN'S CAVE: Antiques and curios went under the hammer at the weekend in aid of St Cuthbert's Hospice, Durham. The auction was held at Durham Indoor Bowling Club, on Abbey Road, near Newton Hall.
