YOUNGSTERS from across the country are being invited to nominate their fathers for an award.

The Top Dad competition - won last year by North-East father-of-two Tony Dixon - asks children to write a letter explaining why their father is so special.

Keep-fit fanatic and charity fundraiser Mr Dixon, of Redcar, east Cleveland, was nominated by his children, Daniel and Sophie, after giving up football to support their disco-dancing hobby.

This year's winning dad will receive an all-expenses paid family weekend in London in June, where he will pick up the Top Dad 2002 trophy and a wardrobe of latest fashion ties.

John Mott, chairman of the competition organisers, The Guild of British Tie Makers, said: "Naturally, almost every child likes to think their dad is the tops, but our special award turns the spotlight on one of the country's unsung heroes."

Children who want to nominate their father should send a letter of no longer than 100 words to Top Dads, Guild of British Tie Makers, 5 Portland Place, London W1B 1PW by May 30.
