SHOPPERS were greeted by pyjama-wearing workers serving marmalade on toast when they visited their local supermarket.
Staff at Asda, in Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, also raffled three breakfast hampers as they celebrated National Marmalade Day by raising money for the Ramshaw Animal Rescue Centre.
About ten workers turned up to work in their pyjamas to greet customers coming into the store with raffle tickets.
Collection buckets were also placed at checkouts, helping to raise about £80 to support the work of the animal charity.
John Bowman, warehouse assistant at the store, said the day had been a huge success.
"The customers responded really well and seemed to enjoy it,'' he said.
The store is also holding a photograph competition to mark National Mutt Week, which starts on Thursday. Customers are being asked to take a photograph of their dog, showing its best smile, to the store's customer services desk.
Names and telephone numbers of the entrants must be written on the back of the photographs.
The winning entry will be chosen on March 14.
