FOOTBALL souvenirs will be auctioned at a charity event to raise money for young players.

Former Liverpool hero Tommy Smith will be the guest of honour at the event in the Civic Hall, Shildon, on May 31.

The sportsmen's dinner has been organised to help raise money for the Shildon Junior Football squad and the Doug Grant six-a-side league.

Organiser Doug Grant, from Oaklea, Shildon, said he was hoping that parents, local businesses and football fans alike would show their support.

He said: "Over the last two seasons we have struggled with the upkeep for Shildon Juniors. The children are paying subs but you can only charge them so much.

"We have gone from having just two teams to six and if we can raise about £1,000 from this dinner that would take care of two of the teams for the coming season.''

As well as listening to Mr Smith recall his days as Liverpool's hard man, guests will be served a four-course dinner and be entertained by comedian Willie Miller.

Among the football memorabilia up for grabs are signed shirts from Newcastle United, Derby County and Manchester City, signed footballs from Middlesbrough, Darlington and Celtic and an Everton pendant.

Mr Grant had organised a similar event which was to be held in November last year but it had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

He said: "It will be a good evening for anyone who is interested in football or who has been following the game for the past 20 to 30 years.

"We are trying to encourage businesses to purchase tables for ten at £200 or tickets are £25 each and the whole thing is to help the kids.''

Anyone wishing to buy a ticket or offer sponsorship to the youngsters can contact Mr Grant on 0773 226089.
