RAILWAY history repeated itself yesterday as the world's fastest steam locomotive set out on another record-breaking journey . . . well, virtually.
Enthusiasts gathered at the National Railway Museum (NRM), in York, to see a virtual model of Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley's world-beating A4 Class locomotive, steaming along the Settle to Carlisle line.
The 3D images were created by the Microsoft Train Simulator, which gives its "driver" an image of the controls and the route ahead.
The computer system will enable Mallard and other famous names to be put through their paces at the NRM's Cab It event this Saturday and Sunday.
Museum chiefs are also hoping to show virtual reality versions of the experimental Advanced Passenger Train, the BR Type 3 Class 37, the Deltic Prototype and other locomotives in the national collection.
Robin Gray, computer interactives technician for NRM, said: "The new Microsoft simulator has proved very popular because it enables enthusiasts to build their own models as well as running the classics, such as Flying Scotsman, that come with the package.
"This has enabled us to obtain a model that will allow our visitors to experience the thrill of seeing Mallard back in steam. It is as close to reality as we are ever likely to get, without taking the loco back out on to the track."
Mallard's record was set on July 3, 1938, when the LNER 4-6-2 A4 Class No 4468 reached 126mph on a stretch of the East Coast Main Line between Peterborough and Grantham.
Visitors to this weekend's event will also have the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of the only world-famous Bullet train on display outside its home country of Japan.
Mallard's virtual run takes place in the museum's Gibb Theatre at 11.45am and 2pm on both days.
