DISABLED campaigners, who have battled for 30 years to have access to Darlington library, are delighted they have finally won their fight.
Darlington Borough Council's plans for the Crown Street library have been approved by the Secretary of State for the Environment.
For three decades disabled groups have campaigned for better access. In 1972, campaigners chained themselves to the railings outside the library to protest against the lack of disabled access. And two years ago disabled people set up a task force to lobby for changes.
One campaigner, Josie Collins, 69, a wheelchair user, said: "This is brilliant news. We have been fighting for this for 30 years and we have finally succeeded. I am absolutely delighted."
