TEENAGER Katherine Garvey is celebrating winning a top music prize.
The 16-year-old, from Heslington, York, won the Edwin Austin Hallas Memorial Trophy at the Harrogate Competitive Festival of Music, Speech and Drama,
The award to Katherine, a pupil at St Elphin's Church of England School, Darley Dale near Matlock, was for her outstanding recorder playing.
She was the winner in two open classes at the festival - treble recorder solo and, with fellow-musician Gemma Sheeham-Dare, the duet treble recorder class.
Her mother, Margaret, is a housemistress and music teacher at St Elphin's, and, as Margarette Ashton, a member of the York early music ensemble Concert Royal.
St Elphin's headteacher, Erica Taylor, said: "Katherine has inherited her mother's musical talent, and everyone at St Elphin's is delighted that she has triumphed in this prestigious festival."
"We are looking forward to Katherine's participation, together with that of her fellow pupils, in the competitive music festivals at Chesterfield and Buxton in April."
