ALASKAN malamutes, Siberian huskies and "Euro-hounds" will be straining at the leash this weekend as the Forestry Commission hosts the UK Sled Dog Championships in Dalby Forest, near Pickering.

Ninety teams from as far afield as Dorset and northern Scotland will descend on the 8,600-acre woodland on Saturday and Sunday to claim the title of top dogs.

Reaching speeds of up to 30mph, teams compete over a demanding course between three and five miles long.

Winners will go forward to represent Great Britain at next year's world championships in France.

Organiser Alistair Spowart, from Moor Monkton, near York, will be racing in the six- dog category with his Siberian huskies.

"There will be a wide variety of dogs on show, including cross breeds called Euro-hounds which are renowned for their speed," said Mr Spowart.

The event takes place from 9am until 2pm each day and will be signposted from Dalby Forest Drive (£1.50 per vehicle).

Visitors bringing their own dogs must keep them on a lead at all times.
